Hard Wood Floor Installation and Maintenance
Hard wood floor installation and maintenance
Installing hardwood floors can be a great way to add beauty and value to your home. Here are the general steps for installation and maintenance:
Installation:
- Acclimate the wood: Before installation, allow the wood to acclimate to the room where it will be installed. This can take several days or even weeks, depending on the wood species and climate.
- Prepare the subfloor: The subfloor must be clean, dry, and level before installation. If necessary, use a self-leveling compound to correct any uneven areas.
- Lay down a vapor barrier: A vapor barrier helps prevent moisture from seeping into the wood. Use a polyethylene sheeting to create a barrier.
- Install the wood: Begin installation at the longest, most visible wall. Use a flooring nailer or stapler to secure the wood planks to the subfloor. Be sure to leave a small gap around the edges to allow for expansion.
- Sand and finish: Once the wood is installed, sand it smooth and apply a finish. A polyurethane finish is a durable and popular choice.
Maintenance:
- Clean regularly: Sweep or vacuum the floors regularly to prevent dirt and debris from scratching the surface. Use a damp mop or hardwood floor cleaner for occasional deep cleaning.
- Protect from moisture: Keep the floors dry and avoid using water to clean them. Clean up spills immediately to prevent damage.
- Prevent scratches: Place felt pads on furniture legs and avoid wearing high heels or shoes with cleats on the floors.
- Refinish as needed: Over time, the finish may wear down and the floors may become scratched or dull. When this happens, it’s time to refinish the floors. Sand them down to remove the old finish, and apply a new coat of polyurethane.
